ISR Survival Stories

Our 2-year-old son, Ty, was two weeks shy of finishing his initial roll-to-float lessons when we got a first hand demonstration of how well IRS works.

Here's our story:
We had our son in swim lessons with the British Swim school for a few months when my husband told me that he was actually getting worse in the water-more clingy and less secure. We took him out immediately and were trying to find a new swim program when we received an email from a friend showing the video of Miles. We knew it was exactly what we were looking for. We signed him up and began lessons right away.

A month later my mother-in-law was playing with my son near their pool and got distracted by someone else for a split second. Just as she turned her attention back to him she started to scream as she saw him falling-head first-into the deep end of the pool 10 feet away. At the same time, I saw him falling in and ran to jump in to get him. Just as I reached the side of the pool, I saw him pop up and float - just like he did in his lessons. This time, however, he was fully clothed in jeans, a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, sneakers and socks, as it was a cold day. We hadn't got to that part of our lessons yet!! I pulled him right out of the pool and saw that, thankfully, he was just fine. If it wasn't for ISR I honestly don't know what would have happened. In the very least I imagine he would have been pretty traumatized and at the very worst we may have lost our son.

We will forever be grateful to ISR and to our wonderful instructor, Kristy Wexler. We will continue to recommend ISR to everyone we can. Thank you again for your wonderful program.

With Heartfelt Gratitude,

Over the weekend, I had to take my daughter and a group of friends to a birthday party. We left Gracie at home with my sisters boyfriend to baby-sit. Jeff said he left her alone just for a "moment" to go into the next room to get wrapping paper. When I left, I kept the garage door open and we assume Gracie saw all of us leave and came outside to see where we all were. When Jeff realized Gracie was missing, he could not locate her in the house and proceeded outside. There was Gracie. Floating face up in winter clothes in our front yard pond in ice cold water. She was just lying there, staring up. Jeff pulled her out and she seemed to have been shaken up just a little. I think it was because of the water temperature. We found her net in the pond. Gracie had gone out to a very familiar place to catch her fish as she always does. I was worried but thankful and relieved that my Gracie knew exactly what to do. I thank you for teaching her the life saving skill she needed that day! Thank You!

I would like to thank you. My son Shelby was your student this past fall. He loved his lessons with you. I would like to thank you because you saved his life.

You saved his life on Easter Sunday, and all of your hard work allowed our son to think. You see, he was swimming on the steps, and tried to touch the deep step when the water went over his head. He started to swim but had already been playing for over one hour, and the frigid water made him very tired. He immediately turned over underwater and came up into his float. I had time to dive in and help him to the edge. He could have easily drowned, but due to your training he flipped over under the water coming up on his back to rest until he was out of trouble.

Thank you for teaching my son his own life saving skills. It gets me choked up thinking about what if we had not placed him in your classes. Thank you again for teaching my son.

Our 14 month old son finished his ISR classes in February. This Saturday, our whole family was outside playing. I went into the house to cook dinner and my husband stayed out with the children. At one point, our oldest daughter walked away from my husband and told him she was going inside. My 14 month old followed her. My husband thought she knew he followed her, she didn't. In the beginning of my sons ISR classes, he had a certain cry when he was being trained in the water. It wasn't his normal cry. It sounded like he was saying "I don't like being in this water!" As I stood there in my kitchen, I recognized that specific cry. I ran out the back door and found my son floating in our very cold pool, with perfect ISR form, fully clothed in two layers of clothing, a very wet diaper, and tennis shoes. I reached in the water and picked him up (he was close to the edge) and he didn't even cough. He accidentally fell in that cold pool and automatically remembered what he was taught....so much so that he didn't swallow one bit of water! We dried him off, warmed him up...and he was perfectly fine.

Since yesterday, I have been just staring at my baby in amazement. In the full knowledge that had we not made the sacrifices we did to get him water trained, he would be dead right now. None of us heard him fall in that pool, we only heard him cry. We would not have heard that cry had he not been taught the self rescue technique. My heart aches for other parents who have lost babies to water accidents. ISR's goal to ensure "that not one more child drowns" was fulfilled today. I strongly encourage everyone who has children to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to make your baby water safe. This program works, our son is L-I-V-I-N-G proof! And a huge thank you to his instructors, Bonnie and Becky!

Just this past week my husband got a first hand look at how well the swim lessons have been going so far for our 21 month old son, Nicolas, who has been under your instruction for 3 weeks now. Nicolas was "helping" his father with some yard work in a planter around our swimming pool. They were both on the inside of the baby gate. Nicolas decided he had enough of planting & jumped straight into the pool, without hesitation. Jose then reacted by jumping in to help him up to the steps, but was amazed at how Nicolas instinctively knew to roll over & float on his back without reservation or fear.

Many thanks to you & your instruction, which has already helped our son cope in a swimming pool in just 3 short weeks.

Ten minutes ago, my Quentin who is now three years old, fell into our pool trying to retrieve a toy boat. My husband and his brother were both about 100 feet away working in our garage. My brother in law heard a splash and was running towards the pool when he said, "Quentin just bobbed up and went to the side of the pool and calmly pulled himself out." My brother in law was very shaken up by it and said it was the darnedist thing (he is visiting from Arkansas) he had every seen. Quentin is fine but got upset at the thought that he would be put into time out for going near the pool without permission. My son is fine and I can't help but thank you again for the service you provide. Not only did he just matter of factly get himself out of the pool but it didn't scare him being in the water because he knew just what to do.

Thank you just does not seem like enough....just thought I would share this with you all. God Bless you and yours through the holiday seasons and the year to come.

My son, William, is 33 months old and started ISR this summer. The other evening he was watching my husband clean our pool. My son was standing very close to the edge watching Daddy. When Daddy asked him to move away from the pool instead of stepping forward he stepped backwards. He fell right into the pool - fully clothed, even wearing his sneakers. He came up, rolled into his float got his breath and began swimming to the wall, rolled over again and caught another breath and swam to the steps. He came out of the water and said, "Mom, I fell in and I was swimming!" The lessons have been a fabulous experience for the entire family, but especially for my little boy William.
